Joe has been with the same dealership for eight years. He’s a certified master tech with L1, and has even invested in his own factory scan tool. The dealership has been slow, but being a team leader he’s been doing okay. A new “management consultant” arrived and now the techs are expected to work six days a week. There is no extra work being generated so he now has to stand around waiting for jobs.

After a few weeks he goes to his manager to express his concern. The manager gets angry and tells him if he doesn’t like it to hit the road. Joe just dropped off his resume with you and it looks very good. If you were not actively looking for a tech, what might you do?

#1: Keep the resume on file.

#2: Alert the other shop owners I know in the area to the situation in case they are looking.

#3: Talk to him to gain some information about where he works now.

If I had a two week backlog of work? Make him an offer and start training him.

Wink He starts Monday. The last time I missed out on a tech of this caliber, I made a vow that I would be ready when the next one came along. I don't like missing opportunities . . .

Hi Tom,

Please tell me more about number three

Louis:

Nothing specific....just more under the category of learning by asking and listening. I'd just say: "What's new (or what's happening) at the shop where you work now?" He just might tell me something that I can learn from.

That's a very good idea! I'm going to keep that in mind. Thanks Tom, I appreciate your reply.
