A while back I posted about the landscaping I had replace at the shop. The original post was called "Unknown and Unknowable" because I think management must often make decisions for which there are no figures.
These decisions are based on theory and results are normally only realized over time, if ever. For instance, we may never know the result of a few kind words to a stranger, nor a few rude words to a client.
I think the same holds true with improvements, such as my landscaping project. The cost was easily determined, but the value, that's very tough. A manager could only be guided on theory. The theory in this case is landscaping is attractive. People may prefer attractive places, thus the landscaping may pay for itself and even earn a return.
Only time will tell, but I have noticed one additional benefit, I never anticipated. The litter in front of my building has been drastically reduced. The building faces a very busy boulevard. Litter has always been a problem.
Since completion of the landscaping, I have noticed about an 80% reduction in litter. Perhaps the more orderly surroundings remind folks to keep things neat? At any rate, it is a welcome and unexpected benefit.
