I had lunch today with a friend that is 69 years old. In the past, he owned two shops, total of 22 employees. He retired 10 years ago at age 59 with enough money to enjoy the rest of his life. Another friend, same age, had a two-man shop. He also retired, but at age 65 with social security only. Both men helped many people in their lives, are great guys and are well respected in the community. Both ran honest operations and did quality work. To neither was money the most important thing, and both enjoyed a good balance in life.
Both men consider themselves successful and I would agree. That said, I would prefer the outcome of the former to the later. Some may argue one was luckier than the other. Perhaps that is true but to me one was a better manager of people, invested wisely and has enjoyed more financial reward as an outcome.
Outcomes are largely based on inputs. Successful careers are the culmination of successful days, incremental improvements. Doing things a little bit better today than yesterday. Looking back, you probably did a lot of work today. The question is, did you spend any time today, working toward a better tomorrow?
