In trying to learn to be a manager instead of a tech I have read several different books over the last few years. (I started with the list that Louis recommends and moved on from there.) Some have been very good and some, not so good. One that surprised me was a book called 7 Practices of Effective Ministry by Stanley/Joiner/Jones. It is one of the best I have read recently. Although it is written for church leaders, it is not a religious book. I feel a lot of what it had to say could apply to any management/owner position.

What books have you read recently that have had an impact?

I recently enjoyed: The Elegant Solution: Toyota's Formula for Mastering Innovation by Matthew E. May and Kevin Roberts

I have also ordered the book you mentioned. I'll read it next week, while I soak up some Caribbean sun Laughing Laughing

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the recommendation.

A text book on leadership skills for business:

It has 24 45-minute lessons and comes with an online quiz for each chapter.

Bud and Louis,
Thanks for the recommendations. I ordered both of them today. It is amazing how inexpensive books are at Amazon.com

Hi Dave,

Especially when I buy the used copies. I'm a real tight wad. All I'm looking for is the information inside, used reads just the same as new to me Laughing Laughing

Even at the risk of sounding like a broken record...I'll recommend this: hit YouTube and watch as many Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares as you can. Both USA and UK versions. I'm telling you, there are GREAT examples of how to lead...and how not to lead. Why read when you can watch? Smile Of course I'm just kidding (about watching over reading), but it is nice to see on camera a manager or owner not leading his business and its members and then the tremendous change when he/she finally learns how to lead. I would be more than willing to discuss any episode at length and its relation to automotive repair and business leadership. Later, Matt.

For example, in an episode I recently viewed (UK version) Gordon is continually astonished by the tendency of an owner/manager to resist or cease investing in a flailing business. What does that tell regular and potential clients?
