Like most folks, when I started in business, I had very little and needed a great deal. Over the years that has changed, to the point that I now have a great deal and need very little. As I set out to acquire the things I felt I needed, my greatest acquisition was the knowledge that removing things can make more money than adding them. The following is a list of ten, I feel any business may do well to remove:
Remove the attitude that the business is doing clients a favor by serving their needs.
Remove the notion that when a business does not charge a clients enough, it is anyone’s fault other than the business’.
Remove any sign, policy or person that does not add value to the client’s transaction.
Remove the attitude that management is about supervising employee’s work. If this is necessary, at least one of them is incompetent. Pay above fair wages, hire the best and lead by example. Train them, equip them and then let them do their job.
Remove all preconceived notions of what people will buy and how much they will pay. Rather design services to be the best they can be and prices fairly, according to cost.
Remove any service that cannot be demonstrated to meet client’s needs better than their other options.
Remove offers of substandard work. Charge an adequate price to provide a job that is the best that can be done. Thank clients sincerely for their business and ask if they have any other needs they will allow us to serve.
Remove any obstacle to improvement of service or joy in work.
Remove the practice of buying anything based on price alone, rather purchase based on overall lowest cost.
Remove any offer from advertising or promotion that cannot be exceeded in practice and does not conform to the overall long-term aim of the company.
