George owned a small service business. Business had been down for several years, but lately seemed even worse. One day George was speaking with his brother, who lived in another State. His brother told George of a similar business, that he frequented. George’s brother said, they are always really busy and I love going there because of the high quality of their service. This set George to thinking. Perhaps if he increased the quality of his service he could save his business?
The next day George announced to the staff that quality was now job one! Everyone was to inspect their work thoroughly. Mistakes would no longer be tolerated. He posted signs stating, “Your work is a reflection of you,” and “Quality, in everything we do.” He also took out an advertisement in the local newspaper, announcing their wonderful service quality. George became a real “quality commando.” He would walk around inspecting things and reminding everyone how important quality was. He would personally check every service that was completed and send any problems back for rework.
