After reading point thirteen by louis it is staggering to me how so many shops fail to execute most or even all of the points.Mainly refering to the handful of shops I have worked for as a tech the last 20years,when reading the points alot seems so obvious to me but my employers do the opposite.I didnt work for one shop that covered more than three let alone all fourteen points. Some felt they had to yell and bang their fist to get results , another was proud and would brag about how much work we turned out with limited tools or no means of information or training.I know not all employers think this way.Could it be me?Can shops and employers be like girfriends which we keep getting attracted to the wrong ones?

Matts post on point one is a great example, even if I could have got even one interested, they wouldnt put any time or effort to putting the points to work. Why not try it! The points benefit everyone, especially the owner. Is it cost,is it not wanting to change an ok business,is it control wanting to be the one calling the shots or is it percieved as too much work. At a quick glance I can see some work and cost to put all fourteen points in place but once up and going I would assume the system could take care of itself with minor cost, major return and maybe few bumps in the road.Kind of like an insuance policy once paid up it looks after itself.I dont get it!

With that off my chest I would like to say I m gald I ran across this site,Im taken back by the amout of insight and knowledge the members put in their post and ideas on topics I would have never consiered. The interpretation of the fourteen point by louis is outstanding. This forum comes at the perfect time as my wife and I are in the process of building our own shop which I will be able to put the points to work. Thanks and keep up the good work!

WOW! I think you have put into words what a lot of people have felt for a long time; Why not? The only answer I have come up with is fear. Not so much in the conventional sense, but fear of the unknown.

Fear of letting go of the familiar, even if it means having much more. There is also a considerable amount of work involved. Ironically it is not more work than is already being done. It is a different kind of work. Thinking, rather than acting.

Western management has two parts of PDSA down pat. It is very good at Planning and Doing. That's where it stops. For the most part there is no Study or reflection. Did it work? If so can it be expanded? If not, why not, what have we learned?

I really appreciate your post and hope more and more readers will start to post their thoughts. Congratulations on your new shop. I have a feeling it is going to be something very special.

That would be very welcome, for more readers to chip in some of their thoughts.
